MAHATMA AND THE MAD BOY was Ismail Merchant's first film as a director.  Based on a story by Sajid, this short film is about a homeless youth searching for food and friendship.  One of his best friends is a statue of Mahatma Gandhi. Although a gathering of Gandhi followers talk of love and caring, they chase the homeless youth away.  This film was made in September 1973 at Juhu Beach.  It premiered in London in 1974 and on PBS television in the U.S. on August 18,1977.
