MAYA AWARDS AND HONOURS
In August of 1966, MAYA received the Southern California Motion Picture Council Award (their highest honour) for best family film. The members of the council, representatives from all southern California women’s clubs, cited the plot and the friendship between the American and Indian boy in the film.
In September of 1966, MAYA was also nominated for the 1966 Nigar Merit Award in Pakistan, the country’s highest motion picture honour. The King Brothers were notified that MAYA was being recognized by the committee, sponsored by the Niger Weekly, after they had screened cinematic art from around the world. The script for MAYA was based upon an original story, “The Wild Elephant” by Jalal Din of Pakistan and Lois Roth.
